My Story

I first stepped into a caregiver role when my grandfather experienced multiple strokes. As his level of care changed, so did my grandmother’s. Upon his passing, my grandmother’s Parkinson’s began to rapidly worsen and I found myself in a caregiver role once again. Both experiences, while very difficult, were also eye opening to what truly matters most on this wild planet. I learned just as much about myself as I did about the medical world. I essentially fell in love with the human connection and genuinely enjoyed coming up with new ways to build others’ self-confidence and independence. In winter of 2019/2020, I had an awesome opportunity to shadow pediatric OT and PT professionals. I was able to observe their interactions and therapeutic strategies for children with a wide range of special needs including autism, sensory processing disorders and other developmental delays. I worked with the kiddos in various environments such as a classroom, gymnastics center, and in-home sessions. From there, I fell into the role of pod teacher for many of those kiddos as well (may the odds be ever in our favor with all that is e-learning)! All of the above solidified my desire to go back to school for pediatric occupational therapy. I am currently pursuing an OTA degree and plan on continuing to expand my knowledge in graduate school after!

My Blue Bird Day

I love the multi-disciplinary approach at Blue Bird and appreciate that so many services are here in one place. Providing a variety of therapies in a school-like program really sets the kiddos up for success and prepares them for future learning environments (including daily life skills)! I highly value the importance of improving the self-confidence of all children and I have seen that the Blue Bird environment matches this goal to increase each kiddo’s independence.
