My Story

I have always been a “helper” at heart. I found that the field of Clinical Social Work aligned with my worldview and gave me the opportunity to do work that she is truly passionate about.

After completing my Master’s degree, started my career as a family psychotherapist at a small, community-based agency in Indianapolis. I primarily worked with families who were involved with the Department of Child Services. I provided weekly home-based family psychotherapy.

Following this experience, accepted a position as a school-based psychotherapist at an elementary school on the west side of Indianapolis.  There I worked with children and families who were in treatment to manage symptoms of their mental illness. I provided individual and family psychotherapy, parental education, crisis intervention, and risk management services.

Upon returning to my home town of Chicago I spent 4 years in private practice primarily working with adults. I value my time in private practice as I was able to refine my clinical skills as a social worker. However, knowing I felt most passionate about working in early childhood, in November 2017, I began my career at BBD. I was the PM preschool teacher at the West Loop location and absolutely loved it! After taking some time off to raise my two young children, I returned to Blue Bird in July 2019 as the Department Head of our Social Work department.

My Blue Bird Day

I love that I have the opportunity to be surrounded by such wonderful children each day. Being a supervisor has provided me with the opportunity to learn more about managing a team of providers and program development. I am lucky to have the opportunity to have a front-row seat in watching the social workers at Blue Bird Day develop as therapists and the program as a whole continue to flourish and serve as a leader in intensive pediatric therapy in Chicago.

My Blue Bird Day Goals

  1. I want to fine-tune my supervisor/management skills. I also am interested in continuing my education in the subject matters of ASD, sensory integration, DIR Floortime, and the Intentional Relationship Model.

From My Peers: Leah is a wonderful leader for her team, keeps everyone’s energy positive, and is a great advocate!
