Kindness and Inclusion

Welcome to Blue Bird Day’s Weekly Lesson Plans. This week we’re working on the theme Kindness and Inclusion! Read below for more themed lesson plans and activities.

Table Time Activity: Appreciation Box

Materials:

Small box.

Scissors.

Paint.

Cards.

Make an appreciation box! When something good or kind happens in your life, write it down on a piece of paper along with how it made you feel and put it into the box. An appreciation box can help your child appreciate kind moments in their life and help them reflect on their feelings when they happen.

Skill Check

The goal of this week is to take a moment to appreciate the good and kind moments in your day-to-day life.

Growing My Skills

Discuss with your child the ways people have been kind to them recently and how that makes them feel.

Floortime Play Activity: Sharing is Caring!

Materials:

Two stuffed animals.

Something to share between them (toys, pretend food, shells, ect.)

Sharing can be easier for some children to practice if it’s happening between others, like two stuffed animals. Give the first stuffed animal the first object, then the other stuffed animal gets the next. Then, have your child do the same, splitting the objects fairly between the two animals.

Skill Check

The goal of this activity is to practice sharing.

Growing My Skills

Talk to your child about how the stuffed animals are sharing nicely and fairly with each other.

Relaxation Time Activity: Relaxing Reads

Materials:

Book: Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller (Book or Read Aloud)

Skill Check

The goal this week is to learn more about being kind.

Growing My Skills

Read the book together.

Talk with your child about ways they can be kind in their day-to-day lives.

Creative Time Activity: Kindness Coloring Page

Materials:

Printable coloring page.

Markers or crayons.

Skill Check

The goal of this activity is for your child to think about being kind while building shape identification skills.

Growing My Skills

Print out the Always Be Kind coloring page.

Have your child color it in!

Discuss what shapes they’re coloring in the background.

Movement Time Activity: Kindness Song and Dance

Materials:

Toy instruments.

Your singing voice and dancing body!

Make up a song about kindness and inclusion with your child, including lyrics and silly dance moves to match. The song can be pretty simple (“When am I kind? I’m kind when I…”).

Skill Check

The goal this week is to be creative while moving your body!

Growing My Skills

Come up with some additional dance moves that relate to the song and have your child imitate you.

Language Time Activity: Sesame Street Inclusion

Materials:

Watch Sesame Street’s video about inclusion.

Skill Check

The goal this week is to learn what ‘include’ means.

Growing My Skills

Discuss with your child how they have been included or helped to include someone someone else recently.
